Good practices in the Wadden Sea

Meet small enterprises working hard to improve sustainability. Within the framework of the Interreg projects PROWAD Link and PROWAD, good practice examples were collected to show how Wadden Sea entrepreneurs such as restaurants, accommodation, transportation, regional products, and communication offer sustainable experiences.

 

Denmark

Bente Bjerrum, Nature Mediator and National Park Partner takes us to Rømø, Denmark, during the 2020 lockdown, and talks about the situation at the Naturcenter Tønnisgård.

 

The project "Powered by Cycling: Panorama" from Esbjerg, Denmark, promotes sustainable tourism to experience the Wadden Sea World Heritage in a nature-friendly way.

 

Schleswig-Holstein

Sigrid Nolte Schefold (www.maerchen-zeit.eu) is a teller of fairy tales and an expression paintress in Bokel, Germany. Normally she takes her students and guests outside to the beach and the Wadden Sea to be inspired by the nature. During the 2020 lockdown, she started late night fairy tale session online from the safety of her home.

 

Jan Krüger, mudflat guide on the North Frisian Island of Sylt in the middle of the Wadden Sea World Heritage Site and National Park Partner, became very creative in facing the COVID-19 crisis and filmed virtual mudflat walks to experience at home.

 

The Kurzentrum Godetied in Büsum (Schleswig-Holstein) is a National Park Partner and contributes to protection measures of the Wadden Sea World Heritage.

 

The Bio-Hotel Miramar in Tönning (Schleswig-Holstein) is a National Park Partner and offers regional biological products and contributes to the protection of the Wadden Sea World Heritage.

 

The restaurant Roter Haubarg in Witzwort (Schleswig-Holstein) is a National Park Partner, offers regional biological products, and contributes to the protection of the Wadden Sea World Heritage.

 

Hamburg

The shipping company Cassen Eils in Cuxhaven (Lower Saxony) is a National Park Partner and provides environment-friendly transportation to the island of Neuwerk (Hamburg) in the Wadden Sea World Heritage.

 

Lower Saxony

Joke Pouliart (waddensea.travel), entrepreneur and National Park Partner in Carolinensiel, Germany, shares how he and his team used the time of the 2020 lockdown and the opportunities he sees rising from pandemic to become a more sustainable society.

 

The Frisian hotel and restaurant NAKUK in Horumersiel (Lower Saxony) is a National Park partner and supports the protection of the Wadden Sea World Heritage.

 

The island of Langeoog (Lower Saxony) is a National Park Partner and contributes to protection measures of the Wadden Sea World Heritage.

 

The "Urlauberbus Ostfriesland" (holiday bus) is an example of sustainable transport in the Wadden Sea World Heritage Destination Ostfriesland (Lower Saxony).

 

Netherlands

Ab Kiewied, entrepreneur and educational fisherman on Ameland, Netherlands, shares how a diverse portfolio helped him meet the first fall-outs of the 2020 lockdown and how he intends to meet the returning tourists.

 

The Seedykster Toer (Marrum) provides sustainable nature experience and helps to raise awareness of the need to protect the Wadden Sea World Heritage.

 

Waddengoud cooperates with local entrepreneurs in the Wadden Sea region to develop sustainable products and offers, and to market them.

 

The Dutch Waddenvereniging works towards the protection of the Wadden Sea and cooperates with private partners to engage them in safeguarding the outstanding universal value of the Wadden Sea World Heritage.
