The Wadden Sea in Transition: Cumulative Pressures and Conservation

The 16th International Scientific Wadden Sea Symposium (ISWSS) will take place from Tuesday, 28 October, to Thursday, 30 October 2025, in Groningen, Netherlands. The event will bring together up to 200 scientists from Denmark, Germany, and the Netherlands to discuss key scientific topics related to the UNESCO Wadden Sea World Heritage Site.

The symposium will focus on the cumulative impacts of natural and human-induced factors on the site’s Outstanding Universal Value (OUV). Topics include tides, seasonal changes, climate change, pollution, fisheries, energy, shipping, coastal defence, and tourism. Discussions will contribute to a broader understanding of these influences and their implications for management and policy.

Findings from the symposium will feed into the Trilateral Governmental Conference in early 2026 in Denmark.

Further details on the programme, sessions, abstract submissions, and logistics will be shared in the coming months.
