From 12 to 16 May, the Lower Saxon Wadden Sea National Park Authority welcomed a delegation from the Sicilian NGO Articolo Uno as part of the ERASMUS+ project “Sustainability of natural and cultural heritage in a European perspective – A comparison between territories.” The visit focused on learning about the Wadden Sea World Heritage Site and exchanging ideas on conservation, education, and community involvement.

The Trilateral Wadden Sea Cooperation was a major focus of the agenda. In meetings with Annika Bostelmann, Communications Officer at the Common Wadden Sea Secretariat (CWSS), Peter Südbeck, Head of the National Park authority, and Margrita Sobottka, responsible for trilateral coordination, the delegation learnt about the longstanding collaboration between Germany, the Netherlands, and Denmark. CWSS highlighted the vital role of international cooperation in safeguarding the Wadden Sea’s Outstanding Universal Value.

Highlights of the programme included field excursions to Spiekeroog Island and Langwarder Groden, where participants explored the area’s ecological and geological significance with national park rangers. Discussions centred on how best to communicate the importance of protected areas and embed sustainable practices across different stakeholder groups.

The Sicilian representatives departed with valuable insights and new perspectives to inform their work at both regional and international levels.
